Is your child getting the needed accommodations at school?
Is your parent unsafe in their home?
Do you know someone who needs work accommodations?
Proper accommodation in schools, work and public places is THE LAW under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). And needed safety accommodations can allow a disabled/older person to remain in their home, minimizing fear and worry.
All humans have different levels of functioning, styles of learning, etc. One of my professors used to say that if he lived in a hunting society, he was positive he would be diagnosed by the tribal shaman with a “hunting disability”. Disabilities reflect differences in functioning between a person and their environment. They are not a comment about a person’s intelligence, ability to learn, potential for success, etc.
Hidden disabilities are particularly hard for people to comprehend and have the potential to cause much anguish, hopelessness and despair. A pair of crutches, or eye glasses are common sites. Understanding the world of a person who has a hidden disability such as an aortic aneurysm, irritable bowel syndrome, or bipolar disorder takes new eyes, empathy and wisdom.
Often a disabled person needs an advocate who will push to make sure they receive the accommodations they need so they can learn in school, succeed on the job, or stay safely in their homes. I can consult with you on this, or advocate for you if a stronger arm is needed.
In this wonderful new modern world, we are lucky to have a myriad of new assistive technology available to us providing promising opportunities. Thanks to the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act we also have a mandate as a society to allow people with disabilities to have access in ways that had been too often overlooked. I am a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC). To learn more about what CRCs do, watch this 5 min. video produced by the CRCC.
The best part of being a CRC is taking action to produce positive changes in the life of a person with a disability.
